The Cat Ladies

  • Pie Factory Margate 7 Broad Street Margate, England, CT9 1EW United Kingdom (map)

In her series The Cat Ladies, Kirsty McKenzie creates paradoxical images of beauty and awkwardness, social and antisocial themes. She explores lesbian relationships versus the solitary nature of cats, using the technique of partially blind contour drawings and paintings, to create distortions and a tension between improvisation and control.

Kirsty McKenzie is an interdisciplinary artist, and prolifically creates paintings, drawings, collages, costumes, sound and video installations, as well as her own universe. Her work is often figurative depicting portraits of colourful characters with prominent queer and feminist themes. She employs a child-like exuberance with simplification and distortion of forms, and a brazen use of colour, and infuses strong themes of addiction, obsession, and mental health with a sense of humour. In her series The Cat Ladies, McKenzie creates paradoxical images of beauty and awkwardness, social and antisocial themes.
